I love to draw. It is like most skills, one that gets better with practise. I am unfortunately out of practise! I used to sketch everyday but this has dwindled to a handful of drawings a month. It is an aspect of my creative side that I am not amazingly confident in, I am most likely to rip up a piece than show it to anyone! I thought i would summon up the courage to share some of my new drawings. First up, Hula Girl. This was originally drawn as a caricature for one of my very good friends as a Christmas present when I was a broke student! I wanted to fuse Kawaii, (which means cute in Japanese), tattoo and street art styles. The result was big over the top hair, massive eyes and a cutsey pose. I had my primarily sketch all sorted so set up my easel, chose the canvas and acrylic paints when I realised I had absolutely no idea where my paintbrushes were. Hmm. And right now I can't afford to replace them. Ah. Instead i used pens, something i have never attempted on canvas, but i think it turned out okay.

The second drawing I wanted to share is a different style. It is more in keeping with tattoo art, and I have been thinking about getting a tattoo myself, but would like it to be my own design. That is, when I can summon up the courage! This picture has a lot of symbolic meaning for me. The phoenix represents strength of spirit and in Japanese culture it is a symbol of femininity. I have had a very difficult 2012 with a long term illness I have had to cope with. I wanted this picture to symbolise how I have overcome my problems and that I am now a stronger person in this new year. The drawing started out as an ink line drawing but I felt it needed some colour to bring it to life. I used Derwent Coloursoft pencils which are for me the best alternative to Karisma pencils that have been discontinued.

Another 'Phoenix Girl' drawing I have recently finished. |
I have to stay I love drawing in both of these styles and I think I will continue to do so. Both of these drawings are now available on my etsy.com shop, Katie Neko.
